18th C. Full-Size Portmanteau (Travel Bag)

$450.00

Pronounced: port-man-tow

In the eighteenth century, portmanteaus were cylindrical oblongs with a flap that buckled over the opening, mostly made of leather. Old English Dictionary defines portmanteau as a case or bag for carrying clothing and other belongings when travelling, suitable for carrying on horseback.

We re-create portmanteaus in three sizes, petite, mid-size, and this full-sized version, which measures 22” long by 10” in diameter. It’s generous 28 liter (7.5 gal.) capacity will hold plenty of clothing and items for your journey.

Our Portmanteaus are hand-crafted from premium quality 5-6 oz. bridle leather using American hides. They are 100% vegetable tanned the old-fashioned way with a tightly-controlled three month process using tree bark and other natural tannins (no harsh chemicals).

This leather is strong, waxy and weather resistant with the right amount of greases and tallows to provide a lifetime of service.

Features:

  • Two 1” solid antiqued brass buckles to secure the flap

  • Handles on each end for easy carrying, secured with stitching & red copper rivets

  • Fully hand stitched for durability
